Description
WHAT DOES SPOT PAL DO?
- BREAKS ORAL HABITS
Eliminates tongue, thumb and finger sucking, nail-biting, and tongue thrusting, which allows for proper orofacial development.
- PROPER TONGUE POSTURE
Encourages proper resting posture of the tongue and lips, which maximizes airway space for breathing.
- IMPROVES NASAL BREATHING
Maximizes and conditions habitual breathing through the nose, a closed mouth posture, and the filtration of air through the nasal cavity.
- IMPROVES INTELLIGIBILITY
Teaches proper tongue placement for the production of speech sounds, therefore maximizing overall intelligibility.
- SUPPORTS THE RETENTION OF THE TEETH
Eliminates the tongue’s ability to sit against or apply pressure to the teeth at rest.
- REDUCES SYMPTOMS RELATED TO TMJ
Reduces teeth grinding and teeth clenching by establishing correct oral resting posture.
TONGUE PLACEMENT
Why is correct tongue posture so important? This supports the widening of the palate as your tongue is your palate’s natural expander! Your tongue resting up against your palate also supports the strengthening of the oral facial muscles. A low resting tongue posture, often associated with mouth breathing, puts pressure on the lower jaw, upper jaw and mid-face. Having a low resting position of your tongue during sleep can cause your airway to narrow, which can result in sleep disturbed breathing. Research supports that a compromised airway, or poorly developed airway, and improper breathing can contribute to attention deficits in children. All features of Spot Pal work to promote the tongue’s proper resting position and posture. Proper tongue positioning is known to have the following health benefits: builds strength in the posterior portion of the oral cavity, improves intelligibility, promotes nasal breathing, improves occlusion and reduces symptoms associated with TMJ/D.
NASAL BREATHING
One of the major benefits of proper tongue placement is that it supports nasal breathing. Nasal breathing allows you to breathe in filtered, humidified air. Proper nasal breathing is optimal compared to mouth breathing and is essential for an individual’s health and development. Evidence and research demonstrate nasal breathing has an extensive amount of health benefits including: filtering allergens and dust, increasing oxygen and air intake, humidifying the air being breathed, habituating a closed mouth posture, maximizing and conditioning nasal breathing, supporting the development of orofacial muscles and helps to limit oral issues such as the buildup of plaque, gingivitis, gum recession and cavities.
THE SPOT DOT
The “spot dot” is the small circle on the back of your Spot Pal that sits against the roof of your mouth. This feature promotes proper tongue resting posture by serving as a reminder of where your tongue tip should be at rest and is placed custom to the user’s palate.
TONGUE POKES
The tongue pokes on the Spot Pal serve to keep the tongue from thrusting against the back of the teeth while also discouraging non-nutritive sucking habits. This feature reminds the tongue to keep off the teeth during speaking, swallowing and while also at rest. The pokes will interfere with negative oral habits such as finger and thumb sucking.
