Sample Tongue Exercises

Every Spot Pal® purchase includes a comprehensive training program. Below are samples from the programs for tongue strength and speech.

Sample Tongue Exercises

Increase tongue strength and range of motion with targeted exercises designed to improve swallowing, speech, and overall oral health.

Begin your journey with these foundational exercises. The appliance should be worn for at least 30 minutes daily during activities such as watching TV, reading, or before bed. Complete these exercises three times a day for optimal results.

Exercise 1: Side to Side

  • Stick out your tongue and move it from one side to the other.
  • Touch the corners of your lips with the tongue tip while keeping the jaw still.
  • Repeat 5 times, three times a day.

Exercise 2: Fat/Skinny Tongue

  • Relax your tongue to make it appear ‘fat,’ then tense it to make it ‘skinny.’
  • Keep the tongue off the lips and point the tip straight ahead.
  • Use an object like a lollipop or toothbrush head to aim at.
  • Repeat 5 times, three times a day.

The full 8 week program comes with every Spot Pal purchase!

Mastering the "T" Sound

Learn how to produce the "T" sound with precision and confidence using the Spot Pal. This exercise focuses on tongue placement, airflow control, and proper technique to improve your articulation.

Step-by-Step Guide

Follow these steps to practice the "T" sound effectively:

  1. Start Position: Begin with your mouth slightly open, and your tongue relaxed in the middle of your mouth.
  2. Raise the Tongue: Gently raise the front part of your tongue so it comes into contact with the Spot Dot (the area called the "alveolar ridge").
  3. Airflow Blockage: Press the tip of your tongue against the Spot Dot to block the airflow.
  4. Build Pressure: Create pressure behind the tongue by slightly raising the back of your tongue against the soft palate (the back part of the roof of your mouth).
  5. Release: Quickly release the tongue from the alveolar ridge to allow air to escape.
  6. Voicing: The "T" sound is unvoiced, meaning your vocal cords do not vibrate during its production. Keep them relaxed and silent.
  7. Lips: Keep your lips slightly open before and during the production of the "T" sound.
  8. Duration: The "T" sound is typically short in duration.

Practice forming the "T" sound slowly and deliberately. Make sure your tongue contacts the Spot Dot accurately and releases quickly to allow airflow. For best results, practice in front of a mirror to monitor your tongue placement.

Helpful Tips:

  • Focus on precision when placing your tongue on the Spot Dot.
  • Avoid engaging your vocal cords—keep them relaxed.
  • If needed, seek guidance from a speech therapist for additional support.
